Mais bordel, c’est qui, lui, déjà ? – Who the fuck is Rockin’ Jelly Bean ?

Début des années 90, internet n’est pas encore un truc pour le grand public. Du coup, pour la myriade de groupes de rock à Tokyo, il n’y a qu’un truc pour se faire remarquer et ramener du public dans la salle : le flyer. Bricolé sur place et imprimé avec les moyens du bord, les groupes font de leur mieux pour avoir le flyer le plus looké, visible et attirant de Tokyo.

In the early 90’s, internet is not yet a stuff for general public. So, for the myriad of rock bands in Tokyo, there’s only one thing to do to be noticed, and get an real audience : the flyer. Hand made and printed with what is at hand, bands do their best to have the best looking, visible and appealing flyer in Tokyo.

Et le vainqueur est… Jackie and the Cedrics, un groupe japonais de surf music. Leur bassiste s’appelle Rockin’ Jelly Bean, et ce mec nous pond des meilleurs graphismes de la ville.

And the winner is… Jackie and the Cedrics, a japanese surf music band. Their bass player is named Rockin’ Jelly Bean, and this guy makes one of the best graphic stuff in town.

30 ans plus tard, c’est une légende mondiale. Des filles, des monstres, des groupes… C’est gore, c’est sexe, c’est plus démentiellement californien que la Californie… C’est Rockin’ Jelly Bean.

30 years later, he’s a worldwide legend. Girls, monsters, bands… It’s gore, it’s sex, it’s more tremendously californian than california… It’s Rockin’ Jelly Bean.

Parce que chacun de ses flyers, chacune de ses illustrations qui passe sous tes yeux te renvoie dans un des univers sexuellement malsains dont tu rêvais quand tu étais ado – Because every of his flyers, every of his illustrations you see takes you to another dirty universe you were dreaming about when you were a teenager.

J’aime bien le marron avec des teintes de vert. Mais apparemment, c’est le jaune que j’utilise le plus pour mes illustrations,. Mon imprimeur tombe toujours à sec de jaune en premier.

I like Greenish brown. But, it seems to be Yellow that I use most for my art works. My printer always loses yellow early.

Ton plat et ton alcool préférés ? – Your favorite meal and alcohol ?

Lengua burrito et bière Tecate, ou de la Téquila ! – Lengua Burrito and Tecate Beer or Tequila!!!

Ta voiture préférée ? – Your favorite car ?

Il y en a un paquet ! Je ne peux pas en choisir une en particulier. Mais j’aime les vieilles japonaises et tout ce qui est MOPAR.

There are a lot! I can’t chose one. But I like Japanese old car and Mopar.

Ton groupe de rock préféré ? – Your favorite rock band ?

A la base, ma musique préférée, c’est les garage bands des années 60, et toute la culture qui va avec. Mais le meilleur, c’est « Bow Wow Wow » que j’écoutais quand j’étais ado.

Basically my favorite is 60’s garage band and that culture, but best is « Bow Wow Wow » which I heard when I was teenager.

Pourquoi ce surnom de Jelly Bean ? Il y a tant d’autres bonbons… What about Jelly Bean as a nickname ? There were so many other sweets for it…

Ma grand-mère m’a donné ce surnom (Jelly Bean) quand elle a vu ma tache de naissance de la taille d’un haricot sur mon épaule. Du coup, Rockin’ Jelly Bean a été mon nom de scène.

My grandmother call me this nickname to see the bean-size bruise in my left shoulder. Rockin’Jelly Bean was my stage name.

Tu appartiens à une génération qui a grandi avec tant de grands artistes. Quel est le premier illustrateur à t’avoir marqué à jamais ? You are from a generation who has grown up with so many great artists… Who was the first illustrator to brand you forever ? And who was the first musician ?

C’est un dessinateur de bandes dessinées, pas un illustrateur. Celui qui m’a influencé le plus est Go Nagai, , le principal artiste de comics quand j’étais un enfant. Juste après, il y a Robert Crumb !

Et concernant la musique : Billy Idol !

He is a comic artist not an illustrator. But I was influenced much from Go Nagai who is the Japanese comic artist when I was kids. Next is Robert Crumb!

D’où vient ta passion pour l’illustration ? Quelqu’un t’a jeté un sort ? Tu viens d’une famille d’artistes ? Ou c’est juste arrivé comme ça, sans véritable cause ? Where does your passion for illustration comes from ? Someone cast you a spell ? You’re from an artists family ? Or it happened just like that, without a known cause ?

Oh, c’est une bonne question… Je n’y ai jamais vraiment pensé. Ma famille est très ordinaire, ce n’est pas une famille d’artistes.

J’ai toujours été content de montrer mes dessins depuis que je suis petit. Et quand je voyais des illustrations où sont dessinées des filles mignonnes, ca me donnait toujours envie d’en dessiner des plus belles. Et je me suis lancé dans l’illustration artistique dans j’ai eu une situation, une renommée et l’argent nécessaire pour le faire.

Oh That’s big question… I never thinking that from now. My family is very ordinary, not an artists family.

I felt joy when showing my drawing to people since I was young. When I see the art works which the woman is drawn on cutely, oneself wants to drawing more beautiful girl.
And I feel that want to draw an art works when I felt a position and fame and much money for the work.

Quel est le principal pouvoir du masque que tu portes toujours en public ? What is the main power of the mask you always wear in public?

Le principal pouvoir ? C’est juste que je ne veux pas montrer mon visage en public. J’ai des cicatrices très moches à cause de mon accident de moto.

Main power??? I just not want to show my face. It’s ugly for the wound of the motorcycle accident.

Quelle est la part de la musique dans tes illustrations ? Et est-ce qu’il y a une part de tes illustrations dans ta musique (je sais, je sais, je suis un putain d’intellectuel) ? What is the part of music in your illustrations ? And is there a part of your illustrations in your music ? (I know, I know, I’m a fucking intellectual)

Effectivement, j’ai toujours pensé que ces deux domaines sont forcément étroitement liés l’un à l’autre. Quand je regarde des trucs artistiques ou des visuels sympas, je peux entendre de la musique.

Et le contraire est vrai aussi. J’aime ressentir ces deux trucs.

Oh yes, I always think that two are very strong necessary relations each other. When I see cool art or some visual, I can hear something music.

And the opposite is the same, too. I like things feeling both.

Bon, tu as créé ta propre marque « Erosty Pop » et ta propre boutique Erostyka (maintenant, il y en a 2, une à Tokyo et une à Nagoya).) Parlons un peu business…

Ce sont les « Jelly Bean Girls ». Un peu comme les « James Bond Girls ». Elles faisaient des trucs pas cool avec des potes pas cool. Je les ai sauvées. Elles ont rejoint notre famille et m’aident dans mon travail maintenant.

La petite nouvelle, Mele, est la 18° Jelly Bean Girl.

They are “Jelly Bean Girl”. Thant’s kind like “Bond Girl”. They use to did very bad things with bad friends.
I saved them. I called them in our family. and they helped my work now.

Newest girl Mele is the 18th Jelly Bean Girl.

Quelle est ta plus grande satisfaction, concernant l’ouverture de ta boutique Erostyka ? What is your best satisfaction about the opening of your Erostyka shop ?

Ca a été très important pour moi de pouvoir écouter l’avis des fans à Erostyka.

Je sponsorise une exposition de groupe à Tokyo pour un hommage à l’artiste de manga japonais Tezuka : « Other Side Of TEZUKA” , du 14 au 21 Juin au TOKYO CULTuART de BEAMS, à Harajuku.

Et comme l’an prochain, ca sera ma 30° année d’activité, je prépare déjà cet anniversaire.
